Zorian's mother is Cikan Kazinski. She is a strict and exacting woman who is highly preoccupied with her family 's honor and social status She told Kirielle that she has a strong belief in old-fashioned gender roles and that is why she wants to prevent Kirielle from studying magic. In reality, she is emotionally scarred from her experience of being the daughter of a witch, specifically the social ostracization that results from being associated and the daughter of a witch. She hopes that by marrying Kirielle off early and preventing her from learning magic she will be spared the same childhood experiences, however, Cikan does this with the assumption that Kirielle's personal goals will be the same as her own. She seems blind to the fact that she is in effect treating her daughter the same way that she herself was treated as a child by her own mother i.e. trying to force her daughter to accept a life that she does not want and is perhaps unsuited for.

She treats her children so strictly that she might be considered mentally abusive. Nonetheless, she provides financial support to her family. She is close-minded and obsessed with the status of her family. She fakes religious devotion to maintain status in her community. Both Zorian and Kirielle dislike her greatly as a person and appear to hold very little filial affection for her.

She begins each restart by criticizing something about Zorian. She also asks him to take Kirielle with him to the academy while she travels to Koth. It is later revealed that this behaviour in each restart is a conscious manipulation on her part as she tries to maneouver Zorian into doing as she wishes by angering him.

Her relationship with Zorian is so bad that it takes him six years of restarts to have a cursory conversation that deviates significantly in any way to the first restart. Zorian only initiates this change because he needs information about Damien (ch. 66). Despite this interaction and a later one in ch. 71 Zorian's feelings towards her are still as lukewarm as when he started the time loop eight years ago. While he seems to understand her better, in terms of her feelings and motivation, this has in no way lessened the disdain he holds for her.

At the beginning of the restarts she is about to depart for Koth with her husband to visit Damien. She is displeased that Damien is planning to marry a woman so far away and thus will be unable to run the family business or grant the family more local influence. Her trip to Koth is an attempt to dissuade Damien from going through with the marriage.
